The Cakes

My cousin Lauren asked me to make two cakes for her wedding reception this past weekend to display alongside the just-for-show wedding cake. And I never turn down an excuse to bake. She sent me a picture of how she wanted them to look and I went from there. My technique, which I made up as I went along and ended up involving hot water and a spoon, improved as I started with the carrot and finished with the chocolate. And oh, yes, I must give credit to my very talented cousin-in-law Christina for providing me with the labels. And now I'm thinking that that whim of going into the wedding cake business in the next few years might actually be something I can do. I must save Utah Valley from their fondant covered cake mix wedding cakes.

The best part of the night was at the end, when the formalities were over and I turned the corner to find my aunts and uncles going at my cakes with greedy, hungry forks. I love the look on Janice's face as she remarks on the fresh ginger and lemon in the cream cheese frosting. It makes me so happy when people enjoy what I make. And so it all appropriately ended on a sweet note.

So amazing Ann. You should become rich and famous for your cakes because I know how amazingly delectable they are.

SO sad I couldn't make it to the reception to taste your gorgeous cakes. They turned out spectacularly...but I knew they would, coming from you. Great seeing you! Only wish it could have been longer.

So beautiful Ann. I really really wish I could have eaten that chocolate cake. I don't think I've ever had one of your cakes. Isn't that crazy and an something awful that needs to be remedied when we come back. Maybe a welcome home cake? Love you. Marci

The carrot was amazing. Seriously, the best I've ever had. Can the frosting and I'd buy it by the truckloads. Mmmmm. Good to see you guys. Perhaps we'll come down -- and you can maybe make a cake.... ;)
