"There's just no accounting for happiness, or the way it turns up like a prodigal who comes back to the dust at your feet having squandered a fortune far away." (Jane Kenyon)

Anticipation

(watching a 20-minute downpour that left a room in our basement flooded)

One way or another, the ever-anticipated baby is coming this week. I'm due today.
So, we've done this four times before, old hat, right?, but I just don't think there's ever getting used to this. It's too extreme in its pain and beauty and wonder to ever become familiar. Every time a baby has arrived hot and pink in my arms, Mark and I both look at each other like "Holy shit! It's a baby!" I mean we've known the entire ten months exactly what's coming and how and why, but it's always shocking somehow, mind and soul-blowing.
We've waited for this one, all six of us, having a better idea of how it will all go down, what he/she will look like, what to expect from its arrival, but I'm sure it will still be surprising in its sweetness and devastation, knocking us all off of our feet for some time to come, redefining our normal, recreating each of us.
And so we're prepared to be blown away, again.

Where do you come from? Your poetic soul strikes me each time. I marvel at your words and grasp of the human condition. Especially the mother kind. It is so true that we are recreated with each birth. The whole family is. Each one.
